In Our Words - Recycling for the Environment and the Spirit
SARAH Works – Ask our Business Partners!
“SARAH means the world to me because it has given me a job where I’m with people and I’m helping out the environment at the same time,” says Anthony, member of the SARAH Inc.’s Recycling crew. That’s pretty much what all the crew members have to say. They love their jobs, they love the guys they work with, and exercise and fresh air are no small benefits in this line of work!.SARAH has taken a “green” approach in the community by recycling five-cent bottles and cans. “We turn every nickel into jobs,” says SARAH Inc. Executive Director Patricia Bourne. “Our teams collect bottles and cans from bins that are strategically placed at about a half dozen locations throughout the shoreline, east of New Haven. And, 100% of the proceeds from these donated containers directly support our jobs programs.”

Two crews are on the go emptying bins, bagging up cans and bottles and piling the bags high into an open trailer. With the addition of returnable water bottles to the mix, the SARAH crews expect to become even busier. They are always inviting new collection box hosts. Once the trailer is full, the cans and bottles are trucked to a commercial recycling plant. The plant, in turn, pays SARAH Inc. for the delivery.
Wearing heavy gloves, the men on this crew have a well-defined division of duties. While one is pushing bottles and cans to the front of the walk-in bin, another is separating out non-recyclable garbage and bags, and still others are standing in cue, two holding each large disposal bag – one pair stepping away and the next moving forward as a parade of bags is filled. Others carry the weighty treasure to the waiting vehicle while another heaves the bag onto the growing pile.
At the Guilford Transfer Station, it isn’t unusual for a visitor to pull up with a delivery, and crew members cheerfully empty the load. They also have proudly participated in “Go Green” events at Bishop’s Orchards Farm Market and with the Branford Chamber of Commerce.
While the can and bottle redemption program has proven successful, SARAH Inc. is always looking to expand its recycling efforts by collaborating with local restaurants, civic groups and businesses on other “green” projects. They are making craft items out of recycled materials that they sell from their SARAH-In-Action facilities.
“We see the abilities in every person we serve. Our goal at SARAH Inc. is to offer a vital link of services and supports that enhance skills and enrich lives,” Bourne says. “For many, that includes meaningful employment.”
As Anthony reminds us, “My mom and gramma taught me: if you think something positive, positive things will happen. Every day I get up, I look forward to having a good day at work. I’ve got a wonderful boss and wonderful friends and I like helping people out in this world. And, I also like helping the environment.”
